How to Protect Your Home from Rodents

Rats and mice don’t need too much space to get in your home. They can squeeze anywhere and chew up almost anything they can find, including wirings. They could also be potential agents of many diseases.

So before they bring trouble to your home, it is best to deal with the problem early. The following are tips you can use to keep your house rodent-free.

Check All Entry Points

The key to rodent proof your home is to prevent them from entering in the first place, that is blocking all small holes or gaps in your house. Look around the house to inspect for any potential entry points and if there are any, make sure to seal them up. You can stuff holes and gaps with wire mesh or black foam.

Windows and doors are probably the easiest way for rodents to make their way into your home, so make sure they are closed at all times.

Pay Close Attention to Your Roof

Rodents can invade your attic through the roof, so check your ventilators, roof shingles, and your house chimney to prevent rodents from getting in your home through those pathways.

Keep Your Home Clean and Tidy

What attracts rodents from invading your home? It’s usually food and warmth. They try several ways to get inside your house where they can get their food source. Make it a habit to clean up any food crumbs in your kitchen after eating and to store food in sealed plastic containers, or place them in the refrigerator if possible.

Pet food is a common food source for rodents, so make sure it is stored well in plastics and to dispose of any leftovers. Also, keep your garbage in sealed bags or containers to prevent rodents from chewing on thrown unfinished food.

It is also important that you keep your home clean and organized. If your property is cluttered and untidy, rodents will find many hidden shelters.

Use Rodent Traps or Repellants

Placing traps on crawl spaces and potential entry points can also be done for an added extra level of protection. Certain substances such as mouse and rat repellents are also helpful to make your home as undesirable as possible to rodents.

A pest-free home provides reassuring comfort that you and your family are living in a safe and sanitary place. Moreover, to secure your house for the future, it is wise that you get homeowner insurance. It is a wise decision to keep yourself financially secure.
